You are not broken
YoU’re just a long way from home
My Name is John McMILLAN. i KNOW THE WAY BACK.
If you've found your way here, chances are something brought you.
Maybe it's that feeling you can't quite name - high-functioning on the outside, quietly exhausted on the inside. Maybe it's the nightly negotiation with yourself that nobody else sees. Maybe it's the sense that you had a breakthrough once, and somehow lost it. Or maybe you're just tired of performing your life instead of actually living it.
Whatever brought you - I'm glad you're here.
I've been where you are.
I was adopted at birth. I spent my first 36 days alone before anyone came for me. Somewhere in those days, a story formed - if my biological mother could give me away, how much can I be worth?
I didn't know it then. But that story ran my life for the next six decades.
Through the drinking. The high-functioning chaos. The losing it all. The long, slow, hard way back. And even through the breakthrough - the moment the grey, wet, dirty blanket finally got ripped off - I found something nobody had warned me about.
The after is harder than the before.
Learning to live without the weight. Learning who you are when you're not being useful to someone. Learning to trust that the stillness isn't failure - it's the roots going deeper.
At 61 years old, I'm still learning this. And I think that's exactly why I can help you with it.
What I've come to understand — after three decades of recovery, 200+ talks, and a lifetime of sitting with people in the hardest moments of their lives - is this:
Most of the patterns we can't break aren't habits.
They're stories.
Stories formed when we were very young, trying to make sense of things that didn't make sense. Stories like I'm not worth keeping or I'm not safe or I'll always mess it up. We stopped calling them stories and started calling them truth. And then we spent the rest of our lives living as if they were.
But here's what I know for certain.
You cannot escape a prison by fighting the walls.
You get free when you see that the walls were built from interpretation - not fact. Not fate. Just an old story a young mind made up to survive.
And old stories CAN be dissolved.
Not through more willpower. Not through trying harder. Through going to the root. Through finally understanding what happened to you - not what's wrong with you.
That's the work I do. With compassion. With honesty. With the full weight of everything I've lived.
I'm also a landscape gardener.
I find that people sometimes laugh at that - this bloke talks about nervous systems and identity and then goes and digs in the dirt.
But the garden has taught me more about the human condition than almost anything else.
A garden in winter doesn't look like much. Stripped back. Dormant. Easy to mistake for something having gone wrong.
But a master gardener knows - winter is when the roots deepen.
The stillness isn't absence. It's preparation.
And spring always comes.
Right now, I'm building something with my colleague Susanne McAllister - a licensed trauma therapist and nervous system specialist - that brings together everything I've learned the long way, and everything she knows from the clinical side.
It's called Home to Self: The Internal Reset Experience.
Eight weeks. Live. Small group. Deeply personal.
For anyone who's tired of the nightly negotiation. Who knows something needs to change. Who doesn't need rock bottom as a prerequisite for deserving support.
More on that soon.
In the meantime - start here.
I've created a free guided meditation called Coming Home to Yourself.
Ten minutes. That's all.
It won't fix everything. But it might remind you that the home you've been looking for isn't somewhere out there.
It's been inside you all along.

We're all fellow travellers on this path, though some might not yet know it
Come. Take my hand.
The best is yet to come.
