A real relationship with ourselves

Our spiritual awakening and growth is, in some measure, a process of becoming real. We are moving from the extrinsic controls of Ego –  of image and what others think of us – to the internal composure of listening to the inner voice, honesty and learning what it is to have a true relationship. We shed the games we play that maintain an old, unuseful way of life.

In place of the old, inauthentic surface, we learn to develop a real relationship with ourselves. We become more aware – of emotions, of a need for rest, of the nonobservance of our values. Sometimes change will come in a flash of insight or a moment of sudden, piercing awareness, but more than often it comes a little at a time. As we stay true to our growth and inner voice, as we keep returning to a power far more vast than ourselves, as we become closer to our friends, we become more real to ourselves.

As we grow, we see that we were always real. We were just looking at the outside.
